Many mothers say that once they have children, they no longer have time to go to the gym or do any formal exercise. Unfortunately just running around after your toddler might make you feel physically exhausted but doesn't really compensate for the physical exercise regime you may have lost. In reality it is possible to follow a fitness regime with a toddler in tow. Determined to help you enjoy a life without limit, we've put together some handy tips for burning those calories and toning those muscles with your little one around.
Incorporate exercise for both you and your child into play time
You don't have to allocate a certain time to exercise each day. The beauty of having children is that they love spending time and having fun with you so what better way to get your recommended 30 minutes of physical activity every day than by playing with your child. At home you can enjoy kicking, throwing or rolling a ball to each other in the garden - plus as well as you both getting exercise, you're also helping your child develop their gross motor skills. Jumping rope together or doing jumping jacks can be just as much fun, providing ample bonding time as well as fitness.
The playground isn't just for kids
Remember how much fun you used to have as a child on the playground? Well why stop. Whilst at the park with your child, try doing the monkey bars to improve your upper arm strength, climbing up and down ladders to improve your overall fitness or improving your balance skills over bridges and balancing beams.
Don't rule out running
Just because your little one can't keep pace or run as far as you, doesn't mean that you can't run. Simply strap your child into a buggy and jog. Depending on their age, they'll either feel invigorated by the experience, loving every minute of their fast ride or the rocking motion of the buggy will lull them to sleep. You don't have to run, you can enjoy a leisurely or brisk walk too - both of which still burn calories.
Dance to the rhythm of the beat
Most children love dancing and it also helps burn calories too. So turn on the music and enjoy a full body workout to your favourite song.
Go for a ride
Do you love riding a bike? Then why stop simply because you have a toddler. Get a child bike seat or pull along trailer to take your little one with you on a couple of laps round the block, a ride to the shops or anywhere else you fancy going.
Utilise child nap times
It is possible to get some solo exercise time in when you have young children, simply wait until nap time and do a workout then. You should be able to fit in a 30 minute fitness DVD session whilst you child sleeps.
