Gisborne – land of the fit
22 April 2008
Melua Watson (Toddler)
One of the first things I noticed here was how fit and healthy everyone looks. Old people aren’t old. Teenagers are spot-free and smiling. From the front window we watch the waka ama canoes power their way down the river at all hours of the day.
So on day two, with assimilation in mind, I put Meg in her Mountain Buggy and set off to find all the fitness ‘facilities’.
The fridge is now plastered with yoga, pilates and learn to surf (obligatory and entirely optimistic) paraphernalia, not to mention toddler gym, swimming and music classes for Meg. We must look like one of those chronic course-going households.
While I like the idea of trying everything, the reality is much more likely to be a class here and there. In the meantime I’m getting all the exercise I need exploring Gisborne’s lovely old neighbourhoods on foot, stopping for Meg to woof at every dog along the way.
