The city embraces the Walking Bus!

The Walking School Bus has had much success since the launch in November, 2011. The kids love walking to school, and slowly but surely our regular walkers are convincing their friends to join them.

Working with the Beach Cities Health District and the city has proven to be very valuable. In a meeting with city officials last week, I discussed how we could make our route to school a safe route by implementing some changes. The city engineer and the Hermosa Beach Police Department were on board to facilitate the changes without hesitation!

Currently there is no safe crossing for our walkers from the west side of the street to the east side of the street at our 15 st. stop. I requested a crosswalk but in order to have a crosswalk, certain city regulations have to be met. The city engineer is looking at placing a stop sign at this location instead. This way cars will have to stop and children can cross safely.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department is assisting our walkers on the west side cross the street to join the Walking School Bus on the East side of the street until the Stop Sign is placed at this location. There is also a parked police vehicle at this location to deter drivers from speeding and driving carelessly in a school zone.

Another request was changing the timing of a traffic light at a major intersection. The city engineer is going to change the walk signal from flashing for 3 seconds to 25 seconds, so we can walk across the street safely. The change will be made after the holidays.

Off to a good start in keeping our students safe while they walk to school!

We have  implemented a Walking School Bus verse that we chant on the way to school as well:
We’re the Walking School Bus... we walk to school;
We look left and right, because safety’s cool;
Walking makes you healthy... walking makes you strong;
If you walk everyday... you can’t go wrong!

Here are a few refresher safety tips to keep you and your family safe while walking:

  • Always walk on the sidewalk, if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic
  • Don’t assume vehicles will stop, make contact with the driver
  • Be alert to engine noise , rear lights, when in parking lots and near drive-ways
  • Watch for turning vehicles
  • Cross in a well-lit area at night
