My biggest challenge but my biggest blessing…..

Silver Fern Joline Henry puts the urban jungle through it's paces as she gets back into shape after giving birth to son, Te Aihireinga.

Attempting to marry professional sport with motherhood has been everything I thought it would be and more.  The last year has been somewhat of a roller coaster. In all honesty, I think I underestimated how becoming a mum would change me, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

First there are the obvious obstacles of getting your body back in shape. Losing the baby weight, managing the feeding, getting fit and strong again, and trying to do this whilst severely sleep deprived. And that doesn’t even take into account the fact that we were trying to raise, manage, nurture this little creature we now had at home.

Slowly, we found our way. And with the help of family and friends, I made my comeback to the international arena September 2013 against Australia (which I have to mention we won!).

As you can imagine, there is a considerable amount of travel and training away from home involved, and there was no way that I was going to spend too long away from my boys (Te Aihirienga and his dad Leif). As such I organised for them to travel alongside us on tour –and this is where I pay tribute to my favourite ‘baby accessory’ - his Mountain Buggy .

Not only was it a great tool for me to walk and run with (with its biggy truck wheels), it also was a godsend when trying to settle or sleep my boy. Given that he was so used to being walked or jogged around in the buggy from a very early age, I guess it just became a comforter for him. The big bonus too is that it is so easy to store down and pull up again when travelling through airports –especially when it’s just you, Son, his buggy , a car seat, and two bags!

Te Aihireinga is now walking, so we have just ordered him a Freerider scooter to attach to the back of his buggy should he wish to get out and about. I'll keep you updated on how he gets on.
