As temperatures drop and sickness rises, your local germ-filled gym daycare may be the last place you want to take your child. But the cool weather shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the outdoors, so why not strap your little ones into their stroller and take advantage of nature’s gym?

A few things to keep in mind in order to ensure that both you and your babe stay safe during your workout:

  • Make sure your child is securely fastened in your stroller. A jogging stroller, such as the Mountain Buggy terrain, is ideal for hitting the trails and exploring local parks and trails. Remember to also lock all wheels whenever you stop the stroller. Even the most subtle incline can send a stroller rolling!
  • Safety in numbers is important, especially as we lose daylight hours. So grab a couple of friends from your local moms’ group and explore together! Make sure to always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.
  • If you are walking in a nature preserve or a state park, please pay attention to the signage - especially concerning aggressive animals.
  • Dress yourself and your child appropriately. You don’t want to be too cold or too hot when working out. With the postpartum hormones in our system, we have a tendency to feel warm. The best plan is to dress in layers (including your little one). You can get cold quickly if the sun goes down or during your cool down (especially if you have been sweating for at least 30 minutes). Remember to wear sunscreen, even in the winter, and bring more water than you think you’ll need.

Hats off to you for showing your children that a little cold weather won’t stop you from getting in a workout, spending time with them, and exploring all that nature has to offer!
